Children’s Ministry at Saint Mark’s is more than Sunday School; it is inclusion in worship, serving others, developing new relationships, and experiencing important events the life of our community. It is nurturing the innate spiritual development within each child, and it involves our entire community of faith!
Here is how we support the spiritual growth of our children:
Children’s Worship, Sunday’s in Whipple Chapel; 10:30 – 11:15; children ages 4 – 3rd grade. Children start the service with families in the Nave, experiencing the beginning procession and acclamation. Then, gather at the base of the broad steps for a send-off prayer, and led by a small cross and acolytes, process into Whipple Chapel. During our worship time we begin with prayer and candles, experience the gospel story assigned to that day, share our thoughts, and do music! Children’s Worship is a hands-on and up close way to experience liturgy for our youngest members.
Small Singers, Sunday’s in Whipple Chapel, during Children’s Worship. This group of musicians is called the Small Singers, after long-time music director Howard Don Small. All children who attend Children’s Worship are encouraged to sing with this group a few times a year during the 10:30 Eucharist service. The oldest children in this group are often given vocal leadership opportunities! Led by Rebecca Poppke.
Cathedral Choristers, Youth 4th grade and up are given opportunity to learn the choral service music and participate as choral leaders the first Sunday of each month during the 10:30 Eucharist service. Led by Harriet McCleary.
Acolytes, 2nd grade and up assist the clergy and congregation with the liturgy. Acolytes carry fire, assist at the altar, and participate fully in the service! Youngest acolytes attend Children’s Worship during that portion of the service. Led by Reverend Siri Hustad.
Outreach, Serving others is an important part of our lives together. Children are encouraged to help with Sunday Night Supper by setting the tables during Sunday School time, then join their families to serve the meal to about 200 people. Families might consider regular donations to Groveland Food shelf or small toiletries to support our neighbors who visit St. Mark’s. Make these donations a part of your weekly shopping trip with your children. (Donations to be placed in the Treasure Chest near the Refectory.)
Families together can serve as Ushers and Greeters, hosts for Sunday Morning Hospitality, or periodically help with Cathedral Clean Up. The choices to help support our Cathedral life are many!
Sunday School is held each week, from 9:15 – 10:15, starting September 15th. From age three through fifth grade, children will experience a welcoming and safe environment where relationships are formed and where they are encouraged in the development of their unique spiritual and creative gifts.
Nursery is available every Sunday morning beginning at 8:00 am for children ages 3 and younger. Parents may leave children in the safe-keeping of caring, engaging and trained staff, so that they may find the spiritual experience that will be most beneficial.
