Book Shop News: Peace and Joy
In troubled times, a renowned naturalist - Jane Goodall - and two modern saints - Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama - offer meditations on peace and joy.

These are the messages of Christmas and beyond, to a world whose turbulence sometimes overwhelms us; and now the Book Shop is glad to offer two new books to treasure, from a renowned naturalist and from two of our generation’s leading saints.
Jane Goodall speaks to the need for understanding among all God’s creatures in A Prayer for World Peace. Beautifully illustrated by Iranian artist Feeroozeh Golmohammed, it offers a visual and verbal meditation for all ages, “all sorts and conditions” of us.

How do we find joy in the face of life’s inevitable suffering? This was the single burning question addressed when Archbishop Desmond Tutu joined the Dalai Lama’s 80th birthday celebration in 2015. Both Nobel Laureates, they both have suffered fifty years of exile and oppression, and yet they may be the most joyful people on the planet. The story of their week together is told in The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World (with co-author and interviewer Douglas Abrams). They ponder what true joy is and the obstacles to it; describe the pillars of its foundation; and they share the “Joy Practices” which anchor their own emotional and spiritual lives.

Perhaps it’s a sign of the agitation and distress many of us are feeling these days, that these two books are “flying out the door” of the Book Shop. But not to worry – there’ll be more! Come and see…
