Tenebrae is an ancient Christian service that makes use of gradually diminishing light through the extinguishing of candles to symbolize the events of Holy Week. The choir sings plainchant psalms and a setting of the Lessons by the Spanish composer Victoria.

Maundy Thursday recalls the beginning of Jesus’ passion in the Garden of Gethsemane, when he asks his disciples to stay awake and watch, but they do not. As part of our Maundy Thursday evening service the altar will be stripped as a symbol of Christ’s passion on the cross, and those who wish will have the opportunity to keep watch after the service.

Saint Mark’s Cathedral Singers Raymond Johnston, director. Le Reniement de St. Pierre (The Denial of Saint Peter) is a dramatic motet dating from the end of the 17th century. Via Crucis is a series of meditations for chorus and organ on The Stations of the Cross.

The Great Vigil is the first service of Easter. The service begins in darkness with the entry of the Pascal candle. The readings recall our salvation history; we renew our baptismal vows and then celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter. Incense will be used.

The greatest high feast of the Church, as we celebrate the day of our Lord’s Resurrection, when the bonds of death and hell are broken, Easter Day carries the joy of the risen Christ. We continue to celebrate Christ’s resurrection.

Rite II Choral Eucharist with full choir and traditional pageantry.
