Día de los Muertos Liturgy
Saturday, November 4 | 5:30 p.m.
We are fortunate to have a Minneapolis Spanish Language congregation developing here at the cathedral under the guidance of Padre Néptali Rodríguez. We have now spent a year together under one roof, learning each others cultural traditions under One God, the Father Almighty.
On November 4, our community will celebrate Día de los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead. It’s important to note that this celebration is not a Mexican version of Halloween. For two weeks leading up to this date, our community will build our altar, or ofrenda, in the Gallery Hall. These altars are not for worship; rather, they are intended to welcome spirits back to the realm of the living. They are adorned with offerings, such as water or a favorite beverage to quench the thirst of the spirits after their long journey, favorite foods, family photos, and a candle for each deceased relative. If a spirit is that of a child, you may find small toys placed on the altar. Please understand that these are not tables for Halloween decorations but rather altars of gifts.
All of us are invited to place offerings on these altars, and we are also warmly invited to attend the 5:30 p.m. Liturgy on November 4, which will be conducted in Spanish.
