When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, ‘This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.’ Jesus said to them, ‘They need not go away; you give them something to eat.’ They replied, ‘We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.’ And he said, ‘Bring them here to me.’ -Matthew 14:15-18
Christians believe faithful leadership serves to strengthen the Body by nurturing order in the midst of chaos, direction in the midst of disorientation, abundance in the midst of scarcity, hope in the midst of despair, and love in the midst of fear. Faithful leaders are called forth and commissioned to give voice to what God has said about us, even when we cannot believe it ourselves: that God has given us everything we need to be the Church in our own time and place – that we know how to discern and ground ourselves in God’s mission, that we know how to organize ourselves to join that mission, and that we know how to reflect, retool, and renew ourselves in order to remain faithful to God’s mission over time. Your Cathedral Council serves in this leadership capacity at Saint Mark’s. They are elected each January and commit to a shared life of prayer, study, and service on your behalf. They ensure both that we have the resources we need to join God’s mission faithfully AND that we have the organization we need to do so fruitfully. Please keep them in your daily prayers.
